According to Om Malik, Six Apart is buying Live Journal for an undisclosed amount. Malik claims that “Six Apart will become one of the largest weblog companies in the world”.
According to Elise Bauer’s calcs, this could put them firmly into the number one position in terms of users. Not sure how accurate her Google based index is, so please let me know if a more accurate assesment exists.

I’d expect more consolidation and MT is most likely on their own path to a buy out.

There is agreement among most analysts that we have barely scratched the surface of blogs (According to Pew Internet & American Life Project, 62% of internet users do not know what a blog is.). Or in other words, there is room for a lot more companies to emerge and thrive. I have not yet heard if Yahoo wants to offer a service, but it will be easy to market to existing email account holders, the way Microsoft is doing.
I would not be surprised if many other companies start to offer this service, for instance, in different languages, or for specific countries.
