Blogging and Productivity Apps

by Steve Broback on December 16, 2005

Working 18 hours a day, brings out a strong desire to be more productive! As I noted in [my last post](http://blogbusinesssummit.com/2005/12/being_productiv_1.htm), I’m using [Omnioutliner 3](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&path=ASIN/B0007Z70WY&tag=texturadesign-20&camp=1789&creative=9325) with the [Kinkless GTD](http://www.kinkless.com/kgtd/) system. Macworld just gave OmniOutliner [a 5 mice review](http://www.macworld.com/products/eddy05/OmniOutliner-Professional-3.php) and an [Editor's Choice Award](http://www.macworld.com/2005/12/features/06eddy3/index.php) for Business and Productivity Software.

Another tip, is using [Markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/) with SmartyPants for postings. Now, it’s a bit geeky, but once you get the syntax, you can bang out blog entries quickly. Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool that works as a plugin for Movable Type (and others.) Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, in your browser, and then filter it to valid XHTML. [SmartyPants](http://daringfireball.net/projects/smartypants/) is a companion plugin that translates text punctuation (quotes, bullets, more) into HTML characters. That means your can just type text and SmartyPants will take care of the rest and the resulting code will be interoperable across platforms and browsers. Finally, the [Safari browser](http://www.apple.com/safari/) includes a built-in spell checker and I don’t have to cut and paste into another app to check the spelling. I also use Safari for RSS and tabbed browsing to create a new window within Safari for the links I want to blog about.
