A Courtesan’s Business Blog

by Teresa Valdez Klein on May 12, 2006

Firefly12I stumbled across Jet Set Lara when I read on Maryam Scoble’s Blog about Lara’s conclusion that Robert Scoble is sexy.

My original thought when I was reading Lara’s blog was, “what an innovative business blog!” Yes, her business is illegal and even morally repugnant to some, but she’s using her blog the same way most business bloggers do: to build relationships with potential customers. What’s more, the blog serves to extend her brand to an even wider audience than those who can afford her $10,000 a day compensation structure.

After reading through her blog, I must say that Lara reminds me a great deal of Inara Serra, the fictional high-class courtesan on Joss Wheadon’s tragically cancelled show, Firefly (iTunes). I suppose that’s the sort of personality that these women must cultivate. Still, her classy image makes me wonder what she does when the typical human disasters - food poisoning, a huge zit, stretch marks - strike.

Lara’s blog is definitely innovative, but wouldn’t word of mouth be the better way to promote it?

I liked your post Teresa but one point of note - what Lara does is not actually illegal in the UK. It would be if someone were organising her (it’s illegal to pimp) or if there were more than one of her in one place at one time (it’s illegal to run a brothel). However selling sex as an individual is not actually illegal here,

Best wishes,

Livvy (The English Courtesan)

Brandon: The blogosphere is really one big word of mouth echo chamber. It gives that conversation a very powerful place on the Web. I think that’s the point of Lara’s blog.

Livvy: I knew there was a reason I liked you Brits so much.

Mumm she reminds me of Inara too!
Livvy is dead right It is not Illegal to be a Courtesan or even an Escort in the UK ,(you could even put it on your Tax form if so inclined) and legal in many places around the world.
Although not considered Illegal in the US in some states I hear?
(A bit double standard when XXX porn is legal)

You where right though dam good advertising on her part, but you have to stay one step ahead of the game(excuse the pun)Do we hear video bloggs on the horizon yet?

To 21st Century: Unfortunately what Lara does is illegal here. She could have sex for money legally in the US ONLY at designated brothels in the state of Nevada in counties which have a population of less than 400,000. So legal prostitutes in NV aren’t independent, unfortunately.
