Our friends at Newstex are going to be manning a booth at the upcoming BlogWorld & New Media Expo which runs November 8-9, or if you’re doing the “E&E” track, from the 7th to the 9th.

Newstex is a service that syndicates blog content to companies around the world, and then shares the content royalties with the bloggers. They’re going to be demoing the service and hanging out on the floor at booth #405.

Aside from having good execution, the core concept behind what Newstex is doing is actually a really cool idea. Sometimes people forget, or just don’t realize, how much good, original content is produced every day in the blogosphere. It’s all valuable, either as product feedback or good analysis or just new information.

Pulling that together and finding an effective way to monetize it–and then sharing that revenue with the bloggers who are creating the content (I’m looking at you, splogs! Stop stealing our content!)…I’m glad that service exists.

Newstex is also running a contest to win a free iPod Nano (one of the new, “phat” ones). To enter, just sign your blog up for their content distribution system. (So let’s see…sign up to get money for your blog content, and maybe win an iPod? I’m looking for the down-side here).

Our client Jott launched their Jott the Vote initiative Oct 17, and I’ve been comparing the blog buzz surrounding it and other launches that occurred that day. Lumenos Health was one of the companies that also announced a new product on the 17th. I plugged their name into Google Blog Search and was surprised by the results. 69 entries found, and almost all of it spam or “pollution” as Jason Calacanis called it at Gnomedex.

I’ve seen a gradual degradation of the quality of results since the service appeared, but this seemed over the top to me. I entered the result set into excel and categorized the results. Then I set it up for filtering and made pivot tables and charts. The file is

The result set included a significant number of blogspot blogs (44) and almost all were splogs (43.) Sadly, all the wordpress.com hosted results (6) were worthless(!) Hopefully, Matt and the gang aren’t being overwhelmed and will be able to delete these offensive sites quickly.

One result was not a blog but a bulletin board entry whose link led to a generic entry page on the site. I gave that one partial credit.

Why can’t algorithms be built to solve this? Spamsieve is terrific at filtering the crap out of my mail algorithmically. Is human-filtered search the answer?

If Intel’s advertising budget is anything to go by, and I would argue that it is, the shift from mainstream TV and Print to the Internet is coming into full swing. A few days ago the New York Times ran a piece interviewing Intel on their shifting advertising budget.

There’s a ton of good stuff that shows how Intel really gets it:

A survey of how consumers are influenced in their buying decisions, which Intel undertook this year, showed that “three or four out of the top five sources have something to do with the online media,” Mr. Maloney said, including search engines and blogs in addition to Web sites.

Basically, research has shown that when people get ready to buy things, they go online to find out more about the product. So instead of watching a TV ad then hopping in the car to check out something at the store, consumers are making more of their purchasing decisions at home, before they even go to the store.

I wonder if blogs encourage people to like your company?

Seth Godin has an incredible knack for starting with complex and important concepts, and then boiling them down to practical principles. It’s one of the reasons he is such a good author.

A few days ago he threw up two posts on building websites - basically a bullet-list for creating a “good enough” web site, and another list for creating a “great” website.

These posts area a great starting point for a company or a team that is struggling to create a new, service-based web site. But I think Seth left out the most important point of all: architecture.

As we move forward, more and more sites will be running on blog content management systems. Wordpress. Movable Type. TextPattern. You would be foolish to build anything less than a full-blown major news site on something else.

So when you set out to build a web site for your company, whether it’s supposed to be “good enough” or “great,” don’t forget to build it as a blog.

The unfortunate truth is that search is filled with splogs. Spammers have figured out just as quickly as the rest of us have that blogs are easy to set up, free, and very good at showing up in search results.

Trying to get through a page of Google BlogSearch results can be like trying to bullseye wamprats with a T-16 (Star Wars? Anyone?). Although they seem to be getting less and less effective, there are a few tricks to searching more effectively, so here’s one of them.

Let’s say I go to BlogSearch and I put in the keywords “motorizr z6tv” (English only) Here’s what shows up on my screen:

I’m willing to bet there are some posts in there that are nabbed from other blogs or press releases or just well disguised spam.

If I run the same search but take out Blogspot blogs by adding “-blogspot” to the search string (sorry Google!), the results look like this:

Now, if I run the same search with blogspot, I get to see all those posts that we pruned with our previous search. Google is going to show me 15 of them: (click to biggie-size).

I clicked through all of those, and I only found three posts that aren’t total regurgitations (but to be fair, they don’t actually say anything, they just appear to be original). That’s a list with 80% spam, removed from your results with one swift stroke.

Not to shabby, eh?
